“Hooyo” is a poem-turned-song by Ahmed Nur Yusuf, born in Baargaal (Bari region) in 1938. Ahmed was a teacher and a prominent poet at the Ministry of Education and Training. He devised this poem to highlight the essence of motherhood:
Oh mother, [the wheels of] worldly affairs you inject with your resilient strength
Unwavering love bestowed by the Most High
The custodian of our culture and tradition
A school of her own, that perfects the human character
Her way of life, a guidance for us all
Mothers do not deviate, her loving counsel cherished by all
Oh mother you are the foundation of this world, the source of life
Mother, you have have carried me for nine months
Oh how I kicked, punched and absorbed your meagre nutrition
Oh mother how you endured the burning pain
The painful baby bites whilst nurturing me you gracefully embraced it
And the nights where sleep is deserved, you lie awake on guard.
Oh mother the debt of gratitude that is owed to you can never be repaid as alluded
Live and prosper, live and prosper oh mother.
“Hooyo” waxaa tiriyey Axmed Nuur Yuusuf oo ku dhashay Baargeel sannadii 1938kii. Axmed oo bare ahaa, wuxuu ka mid ahaa abwaannadii waaweyn ee Wasaaradda Waxbarasha iyo Barbaarinta. Wuxuuna u curiyey suu u tilmaamo wanaagga hooyada ee leedahay.
Hooyooy waxaa tahay hawlaha adduunyada midda hanata badidooda
hagarlada kalgacalada hibada Eebbe siiyee
hiddaha iyo dhaqanka midda haysa xeerkooy
dugsi lagu hirtaayoo dadnimada habeeya
hanaankeeda noloshaba midda laga hal raaco ummaduhu higsanayaan
Hooyo ma liicdooy, hanuunisooy, habbooney loo wada hiloobay.
Hooyoo waxaa tahay hogoshii adduunkoo nolosha hirgelisey
Hooyo calooshaad sagaal bilood igu haysay,
maxaan harraatiyo feedhiyo hedi kugu gujeeyey dhalashadaydii,
hooyooy hafeefiyo xanuuniyo haab baad ku aragtay
qaniinyo ku hafsiiyoo hooyo kama caroorinee
habeenkoo la seexdana waxaad la hurdi weydey
halka aan ka sheegtiyo hawlahayga weeye
Hooyo albaabkaa lama heli karaaye sidaan kugu tilmaamay
ha jirto ha joogto, ha jirto ha joogto hooyo
