The following poem (dedicated to the Somali people) was recited by the renowned Pan-African Jamaican academic: Professor Frederick W. Hickling in Mogadishu in 1979.
I saw you
When I returned
From whence I came
I heard you
When the wind
Whistled by my head
And called me by my name.
I saw your star of glory
Sparkling from afar
Your light against the blue
Singing sweet Somali.
Africa my mother
Africa my mother.
Reached out and touched my face
As tears of joy and oneness
Washed away my fears with grace.
Come hold me now my brother
In this our first embrace
My blood was shed for your victory
Now let us both be free.
My navel string is planted here
My brother, sister, mother, son
No matter how they flogged me there Africa.
The victory will soon be won
